Well, we just called to see how she did with her 5pm feeding. As is her way, she handled the full 16 mls without issue. The real news is that they weighed her early tonight and she gained 40 grams. She is up to 880 grams. Woo Hoo!
OK. I know that most of us are metrically-challenged. I’m certainly not well versed but we have had enough questions on the topic that I think it is worth exploring. I’m a math guy so this should be fun…. at least it will be for me. Ok, a mathematical exposition: There are 1000 grams in a kilogram. There are 2.2 lbs in a kilogram and there are 16 ounces in a pound. As such, there are 35.2 ounces in a kilogram. If you divide 1000 grams by 35.2 ounces in a KG, the result is roughly 28.5. So, there are 28.5 grams per ounce. Translating grams to pounds is actually pretty simple. Think of Mikaila’s 880 grams as being 88% of a kilogram. Again, a kilogram is 2.2 lbs so, at 88% of 2.2lbs, she is 1.94 lbs. To convert the .94 lbs to ounces, simply multiply by the 16 ounces in a pound and you get just shy of 15 ounces. Mikaila is now 1 lb 15 ounces. I hope that was clear. I’m sure there is a Wikipedia entry that does a much better job.

Mikaila has gone through an amazing tansformation and the latest pics show her in perfect form -an absolute delight to my eyes. May God continue to bless all those who watch over her and send positive energy her way.
The pictures in the blog are truly comforting. To complement these, I managed to record a 5 minute video which demonstrated her physical prowess at the ripe young age of 10 days. Even though her eyes were closed, she must have sensed my presence and purpose because immmediatly she began to stretch both arms, kick both feet, open her mouth and roll her head. A real performer is she. Just precious to me. My thoughts are to present this video to her at her college graduation or wedding party, or both. Love to all.
I vote you do the math and report the results. What I got out of that was "bla bla bla bla and bla". The truth is she is doing great and is one ounce shy of 2 LBS! WOW.... that mommy milk is sure GOOD!
Thank God for "math guy"'s like you to at least make the effort for the rest of us!I notice her eyes are open quite a bit now. We are truly witnessing a miracle here... an early lifeform that would normally still be inside her Mommy, tolerating an environment that at best must be so imperfect. Yet there she is, like a little flower reaching ever toward the Light.
Wow- she may hit the 2 lb mark this weekend! I can't wait!
Wow, she is truly a little miracle. Look at her grow before our eyes!! We are so glad to see how amazing she is doing. We check on little Mikaila atleast twice a day and she is always in our thoughts and prayers.
Dara that was one crazy conversion explanation. As a math teacher I'd simply say that there is 2.2 lbs in 1000 grams, so multiply Mikaila's weight in grams by 2.2 and divide your result by 1000, thus giving you her weight in pounds. Your explanation was much more impressive though. We love you guys and can't wait to meet that little angel!!
All our love,
Wendy, Chad, Kaitlyn and Brooke
